Our flag football team has lit the field on fire with their star quarterback junior Isabella Farina and senior Sofia Avila at bay.
As the season just began, the team has experienced both challenges and success.
What makes Loretto’s flag football team so special, is that it is sponsored by the Dallas Cowboys.
This ultimately opened up the opportunity for our athletes to come out and try a sport that is new to the women’s side of sports.
The team consists of a total of 18 players including one girl from middle school.
Their first two games were played on April 28, where they were victorious in their first game amongst YWLA with a score of 28-0.
Junior, Paulina Lucero said, “Though this season is starting rough, Loretto isn’t backing down. We are working hard each day to put Loretto on the board and be the school others don’t find easy to play.”
The team also practices specific strategies and plays to guarantee an angel victory.
This entails reading the defense of the opposing team and being able to adjust the offense as soon as possible to their coverage.
Co-captain senior, Sofia Avila said, “there is one route I am allowed to share and that’s the 67 route which we have practiced and used in games.”
Using this strategy allows for the flag football team to gain yards, make a first down, and even a touchdown.
Head coach Mr. Oscar Nieto and assistant Mr. Rey Chavez have pushed our athletes to the limit making them twice as strong and fast on the field.
Team captain junior Isabella Farina said, “We also have some unique plays, but we can’t disclose them or they wouldn’t be as special anymore. It is important to keep the other team guessing.”

As May approaches, so do their final four games.
They will play against Franklin High School, YWLA, Bowie, and Chapin High School.
After these games have been played, the team will be placed into playoffs that will dictate whether the angels will advance to the next level.
No matter the outcome, the effort and teamwork will make angel history forever.
