On Thursday, April 9, 2026, the Loretto Academy varsity basketball team took on the teachers, administration, and coaches in an intense competition of basketball
The Battle of the Ages took place in the Loretto gym during the homeroom period, where all students were invited to cheer on their teachers and friends.
This exciting basketball game, organized by the Loretto Athletic Association, was a unique way to celebrate the end of the varsity basketball season and build the bond between players and teachers.
An exciting game
The game began with introducing the Angel basketball team and their fierce opponents, the Killer Bees.
The team consisted of many powerful players, including: head coach Romero, assistant coach Danny, coach Buddy, middle school coach Reade, Mr. Nieto, Mrs. Lockhart-Walker, Dr. Benavidez, Ms. Salcido, Mrs. Nevarez, and Mr. Camacho.
Coach and senior Precious Pieri could be seen giving a passionate pep talk to the Bees before the game, encouraging them to leave their best efforts on the court.
Coach and vice president of Loretto Athletic Association, Mia Velazquez, gave an inspiring speech to the varsity team, letting their captains, senior Avabella Munoz and junior Santana Gomez, take the lead.
The game began with an exciting tip off, the teams both evenly matched.
The gym was filled with loud cheers and thunderous applause as students watched their teachers take on their friends.
With coach Danny’s three point shots, coach Romero’s drives to the basket, and Mrs. Lockhart-Walker’s assists, the Killer Bees were a force to be reckoned with.
The varsity angels fought hard to compete with the faculty, but ultimately, the faculty came out victorious, with a score of 30-23 to take the win.
Junior Vivienne Colon was awarded as MVP of the angel varsity team, and head coach Romero was the MVP of the Killer Bees, both key scorers throughout the game.

Competition for a cause
Beyond just a game, the Battle of the Ages provided an outlet for students to have fun, connect with their teachers, and de-stress amidst all the excitement and challenges the last quarter brings.
Junior and varsity basketball player Issabella Munoz said, “It was a fun and unique experience getting to play basketball with the role models we have heard such great stories about!”
The Battle of the Ages brought the school together to rally around the varsity basketball team and celebrate the athleticism of the faculty and staff.
At the end of the game, it wasn’t just about the score, but about the community, dedication, and bonds built and shared between teachers and students!
