Freshman Yorely Hermosillo recently received first and third place in the World Championship Karate (WCK) competition in Buffalo, New York.
The competition occurred on October 29th through the 31st, where Yorely was faced with 15 fierce competitors.
The competition consisted of many competitors from diverse locations such as Canada, England, Puerto Rico, the United States, and Mexico.
Yorely began her karate career in 2015, making her an experienced athlete and current black belt in the sport.
When she was in elementary school, she was given a newspaper where she would look for coloring pages until she discovered an ad for karate.
Yorley said, “It looked fun, so I told my dad, and after months of begging, he took me to the karate academy, which I am still in today.”
She competed in four categories, the major one being team sparring.
Team sparring calls for two athletes to fight for approximately 90 seconds, and whoever receives the most points wins.
Yorely was categorized into the black belt division, where she fought against both boys and girls from the opposing team.
Martial arts athlete Yorely said, “What inspired me was the dedication and hard work I had already put in this year, and also the motivation that my karate family has given me to continue working hard.”
With her extreme dedication, perseverance, and inspiring achievements, Yorely Hermosillo shines as this month’s Angel in the Spotlight.
