On March 10, Loretto’s Science National Honor Society (SNHS) invited students to celebrate Pi Day with different activities to support the cause.
These activities included face painting, a pie walk, pi trivia, and even the opportunity to pie SNHS members and faculty like Mr. Nieto, Dr. Benavidez, and Mr. Sanchez.
Pi Day came to be with the four main officers bouncing around ideas of what they can do for a fundraiser.
The SNHS was introduced to Loretto for the first time this year with Ms. Salcido as the sponsor, Mia Moreno and Andrea Gomez as Co-Presidents, and Ciana Chavez and Mia Cervantes as Co-Vice Presidents.
Sponsor, Ms. Salcido said, “The officers and members from the society were really excited to have such a big turnout.
It was a lot better than we expected and we want to do it for the years to come.”
The members have spread their love for science to the community by volunteering at regional science fairs and presentations at science festivals around the city.
Co-President, Andrea Gomez said, “The kickstart of SNHS has proved successful, and I believe that even thought it’s just the beginning of this organization, we have already accomplished a lot more than we had anticipated.
Our goal for this semester was just to be as active as possible and we’ve achieved this through helping out in science fairs and helping out our community in expanding their scientific experiences.”
Sponsor, Ms. Salcido commented, “It’s a very refreshing thing to see people being so enthusiastic about sharing their love for science, even if some of them are not going to do it in the future.
I hope all the best for the society, because it is something I feel will benefit girls in science.”
This up-and-coming Honor Society has shown its tremendous commitment towards widening the field of women in STEM.
