The Texas midterm elections are an important part of the political system, taking place between presidential elections and determining key leadership positions that influence laws, policies, and everyday life across the state.
During these elections, voters decide on positions such as the governor, state representatives, and other officials who make decisions about education, the economy, and issues that directly impact communities across Texas.
Although midterms do not always receive as much attention as presidential elections, they are still extremely important because they determine who has the power to make decisions that affect people’s daily lives.
In a state as large and influential as Texas, election results can shape policies that impact millions of people, especially in areas like education funding, public services, and community development.
Talarico secured a major Democratic Senate victory, while Republicans face internal conflict with a tense Cornyn-Paxton runoff, and Abbott continues moving forward in his bid for reelection.
Democratic runner Talarico said, “They’re going to call me a radical leftist…we are a threat to their corrupt system,”

Bringing voting to students
This importance was made more clear at our school when representatives came to campus to help eligible seniors register to vote, giving students a direct opportunity to get involved.
This experience made the idea of voting feel more real, especially for seniors who are now able to participate in elections and have a say in decisions that will affect their future.
Senior Sofia Olvera said, “It was definitely great being taught about the voting process in school and what registering to vote entailed; it’s not an opportunity that everyone has but definitely should!”
By bringing voter registration to the school, it showed how engagement can start early and how schools can play a role in encouraging students to become active and informed citizens.
Senior Juliana Puentes said, “Going through the process of registering to vote made me feel more involved, especially knowing that even midterm elections can shape our future.”
Why early engagement matters
Even for students who are not yet old enough to vote, seeing this process up close helps build awareness and understanding of how elections work and why participation matters.
Moments like these help connect what students learn in class to real life, making government and politics feel less distant and more relevant to their everyday experiences.
The Texas midterm elections are not just political events but opportunities for change, and experiences like voter registration at school show how students can begin to take part in shaping their future.
