Loretto’s Model UN Club traveled to New York City, from March 7-12, accompanied by Ms. Pasaret and Mrs. Kimpell, to participate in the National Model United Nations conference.

The trip’s purpose was to immerse students in realistic UN scenarios, allowing them
to discuss issues like climate change and women rights, while also listening and asking questions at conferences.

Junior Andrea Anchondo said, “We have to solve problems in the world like they do in the actual UN, and it’s important to me because I want to go into international relations”

The girls attended sessions at the UN Headquarters, including UN Women and UNICEF
speeches, where experts discussed pressing international challenges, giving students a
firsthand look at global diplomacy.

Justice and Action was one session where Malala Yousafzai and Anne Hathaway spoke
about the lack of progress for women worldwide, explaining that ambassadors must turn words into action.

Andrea said, “When Malala spoke about how her first UN words changed what was happening, and now she realizes they don’t mean that much without real action, it made me think about how important it is to stand up.”

While in New York, the students explored iconic New York landmarks, visiting Rockefeller
Center, Times Square, and the Brooklyn Bridge, experiencing the city while learning in a city that hosts the UN.

Through seminars, speeches, and debates, participants left the trip with more insight in
public speaking, research, and negotiation skills, preparing them for future pursuits.

By the end of the week, the Model UN club returned home with new knowledge, strengthened teamwork, and inspiration, having witnessed international diplomacy firsthand and explored both the UN and New York City.
