This year the Angels in Wings Theatre Company produced their rendition of the musical Chicago with music by Billy Townes, which was showcased Thursday, April 3rd through April 5th, 2025.
Chicago is a 1975 American musical that takes place in the 1920’s about two women who are incarcerated for murder.
The Angels in Wings Theatre Company began their hard work of bringing Chicago to Loretto in January of 2025.
Despite many obstacles the theatre department had their first show at 6:00 pm on Thursday April 3, 2025.
Their second show took place on Friday, which concluded with a celebration and recognition of the seniors that took part in the play.
Nine Loretto seniors took part in the production of Chicago, including Sofia Escobar, Loretto senior, who starred as Velma Kelly.
She said, “My favorite memory was taking the final bows with everyone.”
Known for its intense dance choreography and technique, Chicago was a challenge to put on, but nonetheless the Theater department was able to bring it to the stage successfully.
Sofia Escobar said “ The hardest part was probably the choreography, because most times someone wasn’t there, so they had to catch up. It was difficult especially because it was fosse so we had to do certain steps and moves. And practicing without the band there because of all of the cues.“
Loretto Academy’s Theater Director Mrs. Cortez said, “ the hardest part of the production was getting live music and the dancing to syncopate.”
Mrs. Cortez said “ My favorite part of the production is when I see the kids are getting it, it’s just a moment and it happens at different times, but when everything is coming together, it is something I notice and it is a really good feeling.”
Chicago marked yet another successful musical production made possible by the Angels in Wings Theater Company.
