Latino Vote, no such thing

Daniela Martell, Co-Editor-In-Chief

Joe Biden and Donald Trump had every American on two ends of a spectrum trying to  outweigh one another; these 2020 presidential elections counted on the minority vote to tip the balance.

I find it hard to believe when I see so many Latinos voting for Trump, especially when they are Mexicans.

The majority of Latinos did vote for Biden; however Trump gained more Latino supporters in comparison to 2016.

Nevada and Florida are prime examples of that.

Trump won Florida where the biggest Cuban community resides in; 58 percent of Cubans voted for Trump according to NBC News exit polls.

In Miami-Dade County Trump had about 334,000 votes in 2016 and about 530,000 this year.

In Nevada, Biden and Trump received just about the same support from the Latino community.

Trump knew where to hit the nail.

He sold the democrats as socialists!

When in reality the democratic party is divided all by themselves between those who are democratic socialists and those who aren’t.

Although Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders are from the democratic party, they are in opposing teams within the democrats.

Latinos associating democrats with socialism will benefit republicans, it will assure them the vote.

Venezuelan and Cubans vote for Trump despite his behavior because they don’t want socialism, they are afraid of it.

They fled their countries who were under socialistic regimes because their countries were left in shambles.

Actress Natalie Morales, who is a first generation daughter of Cuban refugees said, “They aren’t racist. They aren’t bad people who want bad things for the world. They are 10000 percent brainwashed.”

Trump uses tactics that are cruel in all honesty in his campaign ads.

Trump’s camping uses the traumas of poverty and abuse that so many Latinx people suffered in their countries.

As a result of his propaganda strategy, Trump won Florida.

He gives misinformation about the “radical left”.

I find it ironic how the person they vote for is making it impossible for their own people to come to the United States.

Why did Joe Biden fail to secure Texas if it is a state with over 11 million Latinos?

Biden was so incredibly close to winning Texas, the closest democrat to turn the state blue.

Six points and Texas would have broken their history with the republican party.

That is because the republicans strategized to take over the counties that are primarily blue.

Zapata County, in the Rio Grande Plain region,  had voted for the democratic party ever since Reconstruction.

There was a lack of democratic presence and Trump took advantage of gaining the Laitin vote by targeting such communities with high Latino populations.

In the UTEP Voting Summit, journalist Robert Moore said, “The most common reason why Latinos don’t vote is because they are not asked.”

Biden took for granted that Hispanic areas in Texas were assured to vote for him.

However the idea that Latinos vote for immigration only is outdated in many cases.

Latinx is not one demographic, the community includes many Latin American countries that have similar yet different issues.

They come from different places and have different experiences.

Cubans and Venezuelans had their socialist country issue.

Mexicans leave because of economic inequality and corruption.

Hondurans and Guatemalans leave their countries because of the lack of jobs.

Salvadorans and Puerto Ricans seek asylum because of natural disasters.

As a Mexican and a resident of a border city, I do focus on immigration policies, but that doesn’t mean that every Latinx will too.

Trump won Florida because he knew what Venezuelans and Cubans were afraid of.

Biden won Arizona and by a wider margin because the majority of the Latinx community was Mexican.

For both republicans and democrats, the 2020 elections taught them about the importance of the latino vote and hopefully they will understand their distinct differences.
