The republican party is in full swing with their debates and primary elections making headlines across the nation.
With four debates occurring from August to December, the country has learned who the republican candidates are and who they would rather cast a vote for.
In the beginning, there were nine politicians at the debate: former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum were all in attendance.
Former president Donald Trump was not present for any of the debates although he is the leading candidate for the Republican party.
Several months later at the Iowa caucus, we see that Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley were the only ones to make it out of the debates.
After these debates and the Iowa caucus, we see that even in his absence, former president Trump still leads in the polls with Nikki Haley trailing behind.
Trump won the Iowa caucus with 51% of the votes, although there were weather troubles in Iowa and people couldn’t get to the polls.
Later in the New Hampshire caucus, Trump won by 54%, but Haley wasn’t far behind with 43% of the votes.
For Haley, this is a huge improvement from only having 19% of the votes in the Iowa caucus.
Both Ramaswamy and DeSantis dropped out in the Iowa and New Hampshire caucuses, respectively, and showed their support for Trump.
This election is something that is completely dividing the nation.
While some states have Trump winning their primaries, some states don’t even think he should be on the ballot.
In Colorado, Trump has been disqualified from being on the primary ballot under section 3 of the 14th Amendment.
The 14th Amendment includes insurrections, which is how the Colorado Supreme Court voted on it.
It was a 4-3 vote on January 4, 2024, that settled that Trump wouldn’t be on their ballot.
With several states trying to follow Colorado’s examples, the division in the nation only spreads as there are more Republican primaries showing Trump as their winner, we will get insight into how this election will work out.
The upcoming primaries in South Carolina, Michigan, and Nevada will start to piece the puzzle together for how the 2024 presidential election will go down.
