Among the many empowering women quotes there are,  there is one that can name every feeling a woman has gone through in this community.

“I believe that at present, women are the best helpers of one another. Let them think; let them act; till they know what they need.”

-Margaret Fuller, Woman in the Nineteenth Century

For Margaret Fuller, an American journalist and advocate for women’s rights, her story was different back in 1845 but her message remains completely relevant.

Her message resonates with women all over the world because women really are helpers of one another.

As Loretto students, the high school girls experience this connection every day.

In our community, the importance of emphasizing sisterhood is not a made-up thing by Loretto but a bond for women worth cherishing.

The Women Empowering Women Club is a great way to start this bond because it is an experience for all the students who are interested in building a better world for women.

During lunch, students must attend the meetings as early as possible to ensure a seat because Ms. Ray’s classroom is sure to be full.

The club’s main goal is to raise awareness of women’s issues and teach that women have a voice and a place in the world.

Their involvement in the community has been notorious since the year started.

It has included hosting a canned food drive for the El Pasoans fighting hunger food bank, raising money for the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation, and cooking for the Ronald McDonald house.

This month of March, in which we celebrated Women’s History Day, they will be partnering with the National Art Honor Society for a  project.

It consists of decorating mannequin heads and donating them to the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation which will give them to breast cancer patients for their wigs.

Ms. Ray, the club sponsor, said, “I’m honored to be their club sponsor.

The girls amaze me with the ideas they have and with their commitment to this organization.

There are  60 girls total but 40 regulars and I am humbled by all their ideas and what they say, and how they want to get involved.”

Ray said, “Soon we will be working with the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation as we had throughout the year, and keeping these connections is a great hope of mine.

I would like to bring in more guest speakers to talk to them about career opportunities, and what they can keep doing for other women.”

This collaboration made Loretto sophomore, Sarah Quintero, proud to be a Women Empowering Women Club member.

Quintero said, “ It feels amazing to be part of such an active club.

The good vibes of getting to join volunteering activities and donation activities keep us going.”

The club officers who organize and lead these volunteering and donation activities work hard.

Loretto senior and club president, Mia White said, “For me, (women empowering women) is not only supporting but also loving the differences that all women have.

Admiring each other closely or from afar promotes and encourages the girls in this Loretto community to do the same for all of our achievements.”

White, is thankful for the group that has formed thanks to the club and can’t wait for incoming students to continue the legacy as well as a good reputation.

“The members of this team are the most reliable women; if we have a drive, they are already engaged and eager to participate,” White said.

As the year progresses learning how to give a helping hand to the community of women has made members of the club motivated to run for president, secretary, and other officers of the club.

With the commitment coming from their hearts, whatever comes next for them, they will stay informed, aware, and ready to help one another.

Whether it’s the 19th or 21st century, the power of sisterhood will shine through like Margaret Fuller and the members of the Women Empowering Women club.
