With the holidays upon us, Loretto Academy is kicking off the holidays with its annual ‘Deck the Doors’ contest.

The general theme was ‘A Small World Christmas’, where each grade level was assigned a country for their door designs.

The freshmen had the theme of Christmas in Hawaii, the sophomores with A Latin Christmas, the juniors with Christmas in Africa, and last but definitely not least the seniors with Christmas in Asia.

The doors could be based off of movies, like Moana, Encanto, Madagascar, or Mulan, all with the goal of fitting into each location theme.

The contest took place during the last period on November 29, 2022, when each homeroom came together to decorate.

Students had two hours to get their doors decorated, all while indulging in festive snacks.

The representatives of each homeroom were in charge of assigning the materials for the respective theme.

A sophomore in her first year at Loretto, Valeria Vazquez, said, “I loved Deck The Doors, the tradition is really fun and it really encouraged me to bond with my classmates.

It was an unforgettable experience.”

A senior homeroom representative, Nicole Rincon said, “I have always loved Deck the Doors.

I think it is a very fun tradition, even if getting all of the supplies sorted out with everyone in the homeroom can get complicated.

I enjoyed this year’s Deck the Doors more than other years because I think that spirits have been really high right now.”

Much like the pumpkin decorating tradition, Christmas songs were played on the speakers and a Christmas-themed trivia was hosted during the decorating, and each correct answer was rewarded with a prize.

The competition is judged on theme development, originality, and craftsmanship.

Senior class vice president Yareli Yu said, “This year was way different for me than past ones because I was way more involved.

I stayed after school to help and really had to keep people informed throughout the whole day.

I definitely did enjoy it better than other years especially since this will be my last one, it was great to be more involved.”

The joyful Christmas spirit and bonding with classmates make the ‘Deck the Doors’ contest one of the most beloved and awaited traditions at Loretto Academy, so ho-ho-ho and happy holidays!
