On Thursday, April 8, 2021, the 85th Masters Tournament teed off in Augusta, Georgia.

While it had only been a few months since the 2020 masters, this year’s tournament went off at its normal time.

After four days of tough competition, Hideki Matsuyama took home the first green jacket won by a Japanese person.

Matsuyama said, “Hopefully, I’ll be a pioneer and many other Japanese will follow.”

After being in the lead for 24 hours, the nerves were weighing on Matsuyama however; he pulled through.

He only won by one stroke, after a few bad putts in the later holes and even hitting it into the water.

The other leaders were Will Zalatoris, Xander Schauffele, and Jordan Speith.

Those three played exceptional games all four days, really putting the pressure on Hideki.

Junior and Loretto golfer, Gabriela Rangel said, “It was nice to see fans back on the course and cheering for these great golfers. It was a great victory for Hideki Matsuyama who hadn’t had a win in 1,344 days.”

Unlike last year, we will have to wait a full year for the next Masters’ winner to be crowned.
