Spring sports are coming up and seasons are starting to heat up.

For starters, the soccer team started their games in mid-January.

Freshmen soccer player, Carolina Matamoros said, “I am super excited to start the season, not only because it’s been super cool to meet new girls and make friends; but also because we haven’t played in forever and it’s really fun getting back into the routine I used to have before Covid.”

Track and field began on Tuesday, January 19, and will compete in seven meets this season.

Britney Martinez, senior track runner, said “Track a contactless sport, I felt generally safe and prepared to go back with a team, knowing that there will be temperature checks before we enter the track, social distancing, and masks required for every athlete and coach.”

Softball also started on Tuesday, January 19.

Senior softball player, Saralie Buendia said, “I’m really excited about the season starting up again because sports at Loretto have always been like a safe haven for me. Since basketball was canceled, I was really hoping I could finish my senior year off with softball.”

After having their fall season cut short, the tennis teams started their season on Tuesday, January 26th.

Senior tennis player, Sophia Borrego said, “COVID has given all of us time to practice and we are ready to get on the court and contribute to the team and to Loretto.”

The golf season is subject to the opening of the Ascarate Golf Course.

Athletic director, Angela Glover said, “Because of COVID, all sports seasons have been cut in half but I’ve tried to get them as many games as I could with the pandemic.”

The Loretto community is doing everything in its power to give these spring athletes the best season possible.
