On September 10th and 11th the Class of 2022 practiced the Vow of Silence in remembrance of the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001 in the United States.

Two planes flew into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hitting the Pentagon outside Washington D.C., and a fourth crashing in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

About 3,000 people were killed during these attacks, making the junior class remember each person’s life that till this day, are loved.

The Vow of Silence is a tradition that has been practiced by the junior grade level  ever since the attack.

This year the juniors had to divide the vow of silence in two days due to Coronavirus restrictions.

Due to the new A and B schedule, some juniors had to experience the vow of silence online, while others had the opportunity to experience it in person.

Junior, Jimena Vega said, “The people who were physically at Loretto took part in the tradition as it has been done for years.

“For those of us who were online, we were instructed not to talk and use the chat to answer the teacher.”

However, Loretta Quintana, had the opportunity to experience it in person.

Quintana said, “This year I had the experience of being able to live the vow of silence but it was a bit complicated since many people did not go and then it was my first day at school and I really wanted to talk but I did my best to keep silent”.

The Class of 2022 not only got to experience a different Vow of Silence, but they are the second generation to do this activity that was not yet born when the tragic event happened.

Vega said, “As a person who wasn’t born in 2001, I’m able to react in respect for all the people who lost a loved one”.

Despite the challenge the junior class had to experience, they all came together spiritually to remember those who lost their lives.
