Meet Amaryia Atkins, Loretto junior and captain of the varsity basketball team.

Atkins has been able to balance the weight of junior year and the responsibility as captain of a varsity team.

She has been playing basketball for five years, and they have paid off!

As captain, leadership is an essential.

Like any other sport, basketball demands discipline.

One can never slack off and miss practice because there is a whole team counting on one.

Rudy Vega, Loretto’s varsity basketball coach, said, “She has shown dedication and leadership by example.

“She finishes first in almost every sprint, hustles from drill to drill, and always goes all out at practice.”

Atkins, in one word, is confidence.

Any activity that she does, she does it with confidence.

Vega also said, “She not only has contributed with her scoring and rebounding but even more so with her voice.

“She was selected as a captain of the team because she is vocal and does not allow anyone else to slack off or go easy.”

Atkins said, “My favorite part about playing basketball in Loretto is being able to do something I love with great supporters.”

Congratulations on being selected for athlete of the month, Atkins!
