Every year at Loretto Academy, the seniors class hosts a 5k walk/run as their service-learning project, better known as the Nun Run.

All classifications and their families are invited to come out to enjoy the event, while supporting an amazing cause.

All the proceeds of the Nun Run go to the Sisters of Loretto in Pakistan, who help to educate girls who may not otherwise be granted the opportunity.

The total amount raised this year has yet to be determined.

The day of the run was a great scene for students and families alike, who were able to kick back and snack on burritos and donuts, enjoy music, and take photos with Loretto students.

It began at 9am and all the awards were announced by 11am.

Taking second place overall in the 5k was Stephen Stresow, a cathedral senior on the track and cross-country team.

He said, “One of my favorite things about the run starts with its name – Nun Run.

Seeing everyone dressed as nuns adds to the fun of the race and serves as a tie to Loretto’s rich history in El Paso.

I think that the historical connection to the city is something a lot of races lack.

I’ve also never seen aid stations that were so energetic; from posting on social media before, during, and after the race, to standing outside the principal’s house with ‘Say hi to Mr. Silva’ signs, which was probably my favorite part of the race.

Its always one of my favorite races because everyone is so lively that it almost gives the whole event a homey feel.

And the course is great scenery, nice quiet neighborhoods.

It’s all very relaxing, and there was free donuts!”

The race has been one of Loretto’s favorite traditions since its creation, and it has continued to be successful year after year.

However, some things about the tradition changed this year under new leadsership.

Regina Deandar, senior class president, said, “This year we did change a bit from past runs.

We changed the logo, which can be seen on our shirts and poster, and we created more divisions in the runner categories so more people could have the chance to win.

We worked really hard to make it an enjoyable race not just running wise but experience wise”.

All the senior class worked tirelessly for weeks to put together an excellent and unique run, and their work definitely paid off for hundreds of runners!

Look out for next year’s race in February, and run (or walk) to support the Sisters in Pakistan.
