With the new year beginning, so does that mean new classes being added to the Loretto curriculum.

Loretto’s newest class is named “Financial Literacy”.

Financial Literacy is a class that is led by Mrs. Gomez and began on the Spring of 2019.

The class was originally supposed to begin in the Fall of 2018, the beginning of this school year, but since the class was rushed it was decided to be held off until later.

The class is given once a day, during sixth period to a group of girls who signed up for the class earlier on.

The class consists of fifteen students; two freshman, two sophomores, and the rest of the students are juniors and seniors.

The class is about learning about life after Loretto and after college, including important things to know about adulthood like how to manage money and file taxes.

The students learn about taxes, financial situations, taking care of a family, spicing up job resumes, and much more.

The class was brought upon when Ms. Johns asked Ms. Gomez what class she wanted to teach this year so she came up with the idea of the class with the help of her students.

Mrs. Gomez, the Financial Literacy teacher, said “They [the students] even asked me what class I had wanted to add and I thought about this one and another one, so I asked the girls from my previous year and they said they would take it.”

During the class, Mrs. Gomez gives her students a certain amount of fake money every Friday.

They get paid for going to class, doing their homework, participating, and other items.

They also however get to use the money on different things, such as using the restroom and getting a homework pass.

The students also learn about college and what to expect about the world of adulthood.
