The Big Sister Little Sister picnic is yet another tradition held by both the seniors and freshmen of Loretto Academy.

Taking place at Biggs Park in Fort Bliss, the activities span the entirety of the school day.

The picnic also takes place during “Hey Week”, a week dedicated to welcome the incoming freshman into high school life.

However, probably the most anticipated event of Hey Week is the Big Sister Little Sister Picnic.

The tradition originated while going over the troubles freshmen may face during their first year of high school.

Throughout the week, the seniors participate in many activities with their paired freshman “little sister”.

The picnic is meant as an ice breaker between seniors and freshmen so that the freshmen may feel comfortable coming to their seniors for advice.

A day of fun-filled activities commence, including blindfolded makeup challenges, dance competitions, tug-of-war, and more.

The activities performed during the picnic are determined by student council, thus varying each year.

This truly adds to the unexpected excitement of the event.

Alvida Aguilar, a freshman, said “It was really fun. I got to bond with my friends and make new friends.”

This event between the seniors and freshmen has been successful in raising freshmen’s self-esteem, as well as starting them off into a great school year, and their time at Loretto.
