The Loretto Academy Cheerleading team returns after a 10 year absence, uplifting the angel pride and creating lasting memories for a new generation of students.
There are 17 girls present on the team, ranging from freshman to senior after trying out in May 2024.
Practices began in June 2024 and continue to this day, the team represents Loretto and Cathedral during volleyball, football, and other important events.
During July 2024, the team attended a UCA cheer camp at Parkland High School that lasted three-days for eight hours; additionally they competed against other teams and learned different cheer techniques.
The 2024-2025 cheerleading captain this year Sofia Escobar said, “Being on the cheerleading team has helped me connect with everyone as well as gain confidence and trust in my teammates when they carry me for the pyramid”.
From the beginning, Sofia Escobar has dedicated herself to the team and continues to be a role model to the girls, not only as a friend but as a sister who lends everyone a hand and encourages kindness.
Throughout the year, the team has achieved remarkable success by building strong bonds, despite being a newly formed group.
Many girls are experiencing this for the first time, unlike other teams that have years of experience.
The team prepared for the upcoming cheer season by doing consistent mobility work and attending cheer camps which have helped build confidence.
A memorable experience for the team was their first time cheering at a Cathedral football game.
With their deep connection, the team is able to create an energetic atmosphere and get the crowd cheering, while performing their routines.

Ava Payne, a sophomore, was chosen to be co-captain for the Loretto Cheerleading Team at the end of the football season.
The co-captain was chosen by the team’s head coach, Claritsa West, through a competitive application process where Ava was able to stand out because of her leadership skills and her courage.
Ava Payne said, “I plan on continuing cheerleading throughout the rest of high school and in college because I want to continue to live out this passion of mine.”
The return of the cheerleading team has brought great joy to both the cheerleaders and the spectators; not only are the girls able to pursue their passion, but school spirit is also soaring to new heights.
The Loretto Academy Cheerleading Team continues to grow by attracting loud crowds and cheering for student-athletes while also showing their diligent cheer moves.
