As the 2024-2025 school year begins, Loretto Academy welcomes new teachers who bring new perspectives, bright ideas, talent, and passion to the classroom.
Get to know the new faces here at Loretto Academy.
Mrs. Millot
Mrs. Millot is the new art teacher at Loretto Academy who teaches art I, art II, and art III, graphic design and the advanced placement art course.
Mrs. Millot said “ I liked art since I was a little girl, I knew that’s what I wanted to do in life.”
Although Mrs. Millot‘s passion is art; she practiced dentistry, where she was able to gain an understanding of the human body.
As a practicing dentist, Mrs. Millot continued her art journey attending workshops, consistently drawing, painting, and sculpting in her free time.
After practicing dentistry for five years, Mrs. Millot went on a different but yet similar career path in visual arts specializing in photography and special makeup for art and theater prosthetic makeup.
Prosthetic makeup was a combination of science and art that allowed her to use her experience and knowledge of the body and incorporate it into her art.
Mrs. Millot worked in Los Angeles, California for four years where she attended Cinema Makeup School in downtown Los Angeles.
While at Cinema Makeup School Mrs. Millot was invited to teach and recommended to the Face Off casting agency.
Face Off is a reality TV show competition that aired from 2011 to 2018 where contestants compete in special effects makeup, testing their skills and imagination.
Mrs. Millot is a season five contender on Face Off.
Mrs. Millot has won many awards including first place at the International Makeup Artists Trade Show in Beauty and Fantasy Face Art, first place in the 2009 Face and Body Art International Convention, and first place in the World Body Painting Championship.
Although Ms. Millot never saw herself being a teacher; she found a calling for it, and discovered that as an educator she is able to learn from her students.
Mrs. Millot said “ Your students challenge you every day and they ask you questions you would have never thought of so you learn more and more and it’s more stimulating for me and there’s nothing better than sharing what you love.”
Mrs. Millot has been an educator for 15 years and a highschool teacher for eight, working at Hanks High School, Coronado High School, and now Loretto Academy.
Mrs. Millot’s goals at Loretto are to give the best of her knowledge and skills to her classes, and get to know the staff and girls.
One thing Mrs. Millot enjoys the most about Loretto Academy is the supportive small community that is prevalent on campus, she said “ I like being in a sisterhood.”
A fun fact about Mrs. Millot is that her favorite color is teal and her favorite color is teal, and favorite animal is the raven; raven’s to her symbolize freedom and mystery.
Ms. Salcido
Ms. Salcido is a new addition to the science department at Loretto Academy, teaching biology and chemistry, this is her first year as a high school educator.
Ms. Salcido has always been curious of the world around her, as a child she was fascinated by the plants and animals that her parents introduced her to.
Ms. Salcido fell in love with science through biology; she said “ through science I can understand myself and the world better.”
Ms. Salcido is no stranger to the Catholic private school environment; she attended Father Yermo from PreK through 12th grade.
Continuing her education, Ms. Salcido attended UTEP where she received a bachelors in biomedical sciences and masters degree in neuroscience from the biology department.
As an undergrad Ms. Salcido conducted research on the circuits of the brain that control the feeding and glucose regulations of the body and research in environmental science regarding invasive plant species in the ecosystem.
While working to complete her masters, Ms. Salcido taught college level laboratories for three years in subjects such as biology, anatomy, physiology, and neurobiology.
Ms. Salcido participated in many outreach programs and clubs at UTEP promoting science literacy and sustainable awareness projects.
After graduating Ms. Salcido took part in an outreach program at the Young Women’s STEAM Research and Preparatory Academy, volunteering under the high school chemistry teacher where she explored what it would be like to teach at a non-college level.
Ms. Salcido enjoys the community aspect of Loretto and her colleagues who love what they do, putting dedication and effort into every child’s education ensuring their students are the best they can be.
Ms. Salcido’s favorite color is green, and her favorite animal is rats, because rats are the model organism used to study the brain, she said “ the fact that a rat and a human have comparable brain composition and functions is very exciting.”
Now taking her experience and knowledge to Loretto, Ms. Salcido hopes to teach the next generation of scientists.
Mr. Cardiel
Mr. Cardiel is a new addition to Loretto Academy this year.
He teaches freshmen algebra one and is a sophomore sponsor.
Before coming to Loretto Academy, Mr. Cardiel taught at Irvin High School in northeast El Paso.
Mr. Cardiel has 33 years of experience in the classroom.
At Loretto Academy, he aims to inspire a love for math and promote a supportive atmosphere that embraces faith and sisterhood.
Besides teaching math at Irvin, he taught basic programming, was a girls soccer and basketball coach, and was a softball coach for 25 years.
He is also a veteran who served for eight years; he was in field artillery and worked in the Military Family Readiness System in El Paso.
He describes those eight years as a great experience that helped him learn about mechanics in warfare.
Mr. Cardiel’s two sons serve in the air force and he encourages others to serve and partake in this useful experience.
He graduated from Irvin High School and then attended the University of Texas at El Paso where he graduated with a bachelor’s in education in math and computer science.
Mr. Cardiel fell in love with teaching at an early age, and he used to help middle school and elementary school students with their math homework.
He said, “What I like about math is that for the most part it’s pretty cut and dry, you know you’re either wrong or you’re right.”
Mr. Cardiel has a certain goal set for his classroom, he said, “I hope to convert those that don’t like math or don’t feel that they’re good at it, I just want them to have a different attitude towards math.”
The transition to teaching at a Catholic school is a change that Mr. Cardiel is especially glad about.
Mr. Cardiel said, “I like the involvement that the girls have in their classes and the things that they do to enhance the sisterhood.”
He said, “The biggest thing I like about Loretto is probably the fact that we can pray here without being criticized, and showing your faith.”
Mr. Cardiel’s favorite animals are dogs because he considers them to be happy animals and his favorite colors are red, white, and blue; he said, “I’ve always been a red, white, and blue guy.”
Even though Mr. Cardiel teaches a serious and complex subject, he said, “The people that really know me think I’m funny, I don’t generally portray that, but once you get to know me, I think I can make you laugh whenever.”
Ms. Crow
Although Ms. Crow used to teach middle school religion at Loretto Academy, she is a new addition to the high school religion department.
In the high school department, she aims to foster a sense of belonging and human dignity for all students, while honoring all of the school’s cherished traditions.
Ms. Crow enjoys teaching high school because it involves more thoughtfulness, discussion, and challenge.
Before coming to Loretto Academy, Ms. Crow taught middle school in California for four years at Moreno Valley; she moved back to Texas because she wanted to be closer to her family.
In San Antonio, she taught middle school at two different Catholic schools, St. Leo the Great and St. Luke the Evangelist.
Ms. Crow has been teaching religion since she was a freshman in high school through her parish’s Confraternity of Christian Doctrine program and it came very naturally to her.
Ms. Crow is a proud Loretto Class of ‘83 graduate, afterwards she attended New Mexico State University where she graduated with a bachelor’s in secondary education in math and science.
She loves teaching religion and said, “I’ve always been fascinated by religion and what people believe, I took classes when I was in college.”
Ms. Crow’s goal for her classroom is to make every single student feel loved; she said, “It doesn’t matter what you have or have not done, I want you to believe that God loves you, and that I care for you, and I try to love you as God loves you.”
Ms. Crow’s favorite thing about Loretto Academy are the traditions, her favorite tradition is the senior Christmas show where the seniors sing “Mary had a Baby.”
She recalled the time where there used to be religious sisters at Loretto and how their teachings of love and compassion are still lessons she carries with her today.
Ms. Crow’s favorite animals are cats and she recently got a new one year old kitten named Ms. Daisy.
Her favorite colors are purple and red and she loves to incorporate them in her outfits and her classroom.
The arrival of these new teachers at Loretto Academy brings fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to all subjects, creating an exciting environment for students.
With their diverse backgrounds and unique teaching techniques, these teachers encourage all students to think critically and creatively.
