The month of October is internationally recognized as breast cancer awareness month.

This year, approximately 330,080 women and an estimated of 2,550 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States.

Loretto girls took the chance and created something wonderful for the El Paso community.

Held on October 30, 2018, the Women Empowering Women Club and the Pre-Med Club joined to create a fundraiser to benefit the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation.

Since pink is the color that represents breast cancer internationally, they came up with the idea of “Pink Day”.

The girls sold handmade pink ribbons and free dress bracelets, which allowed them to wear pink clothes, for the Loretto community.

It was a literal pink day at Loretto; many students wore pink clothes and their beautiful pink ribbons, the support could be seen throughout the school, between classifications, teachers, and staff.

Amy Rodriguez, Women Empowering Women vice president, said, “It was very fulfilling to see how many girls were participating in our fundraiser.

Although not all the girls participated it was really satisfying to see how many girls really did want to support the cause.

Some girls had family members that went through cancer, and they wanted to help somebody else.”

Students and teachers bought them to support the cause, and many even donated extra money.

Julieta Alarcon, Pre-Med Club president, said, “Organizing pink day was a great experience.

I noticed how amazing it is to help the community by selling bracelets and ribbons supporting breast cancer.

Bringing together everyone made me realize that Loretto has a beautiful and united sisterhood.”

Both clubs made a huge effort to make everything go perfect and to make it happen.

Both clubs managed to raise money to donate to the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation, a local cancer organization that serves El Paso cancer patients.

On November 12th, a representative from Rio Grande Cancer Foundation came to claim the donation and speak to the girls regarding the importance of cancer awareness.

Although Pink Day focused on breast cancer, the money raised will be used to benefit all cancer patients.

The two clubs expressed interest in continuing to make Pink Day an annual tradition.
