Loretto Academy got firsthand experience with interacting with the government and civic affairs on an exciting field trip.
From April 7, 2024 to April 12, 2024, Loretto students visited Washington D.C. with US History teacher Mr. Causey.
The Close Up Foundation focused on how citizens can use their voice to impact big issues..
They also got to participate in a reenactment of Congress working on a bill.
Sarah Quintero said, “I got to play the part of the opposing member so I was in charge of making sure that the bill didn’t pass.
I had to make a speech, present my arguments, and make sure that the other members completely understood the bill.
In the end I succeeded and the bill didn’t pass.
I had a lot of fun doing that, and I got a better understanding on how congress works.”
Mr Causey said, “It was impressive to see the Loretto Academy students break out of their comfort zones.
The mock reenactment of passing a bill mixed up Loretto students with other students from all over the country and they represented Loretto in a great way.”
Not only did they learn about Congress, but they also met important Congress members that represent Texas.
They were able to ask questions to Senator Ted Cruz and Representatives Veronica Escobar about their future plans.
Ask Mr. Causey for information regarding next year’s Close Up event if interested.
This trip to Washington D.C. opened Loretto student’s eyes to how much their voice matters; they have the power to influence their state and the nation.
