In keeping with a tradition of community, Loretto students and faculty helped conduct its annual SHOUT (Students Helping Out) Week to benefit an organization by hosting daily events that promote a spirit of giving.
As determined by the students, all SHOUT Week 2024 proceeds were designated to USA for Africa, an organization that serves to help alleviate poverty in Africa.
Angels showcased the care they have for the cause, and this was made evident through their participation throughout the week.
Week’s Activities
In addition to the daily activities, Angels paid a $1 tardy fee for being late that also benefited USA for Africa.
The week started off with “Meditation Monday”, a day in which students could pay $5 to relax during any class period of their choice, and bring comfortable attire to compliment their relaxation.
“Totebag Tuesday” followed, and students paid $8 to design and paint a tote bag.
This concept was both enjoyed by the student, and it promoted a culture of reducing waste, in keeping with Loretto’s implementation of Laudato Si’.
On Wednesday, Loretto hosted a movie day for its students, which required students within a class to collaborate and gather $30 for every student in said class to be able to participate, and allowed individual students the option to wear pajamas for $5.
Students enjoyed classics such as “The Parent Trap”, “The Princess Diaries”, and “Teen Beach Movie”.
Thursday wrapped up the pre-assembly festivities with a $5 candy bar for students to indulge in sweet and sour treats.
Finally, Friday presented us with the SHOUT Week assembly that concludes the week.
Students and faculty raced to celebrate a prosperous week of giving, and additionally held a lip sync competition to add to the fun.
Shouting for Success
Student body vice president, Maria Joaquina Fuentes said, “Having to work the SHOUT Week events helped me realize that contributing to the community and adding our grain of sand to the world goes a long way.
It wasn’t until I did my research on the project that I actually knew the true meaning of SHOUT Week.
Students helping out isn’t just for participating at the school, it shows us women that we as a society and a Catholic community need to lend a helping hand not only now, but in the future as well.”
The students were able to collect over $1,500 from SHOUT Week’s festivities, and were successful in contributing to USA for Africa.
