As is the tradition, the Model U.N Club took its annual trip to attend the Commission on the Status of Women in NYC.
Model U.N Club has monthly meetings and discusses current world issues that specifically affect women.
Last year, the club resumed its customary one-week trip after two years of pandemic.
This year, Ms. Crow took five girls to visit the UN Headquarters in New York City, NY.
The girls that traveled are Juniors Daniela Barraza, Hailey Garcia, Abril Salcido, Grace Tolentino, and Senior Diana Maldonado.
The trip took place during Spring Break from March 11 to 22, 2024 under the priority theme, “Accelerating the achievement of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.”
The girls attended daily conferences and side events where they listened to speakers and met influential people.
Loretto senior, Diana Maldonado, said, “A panel that I really liked and learned a lot from was ‘No Poverty Eradication Without the Empowerment of Women and Girls’.
There was a speaker on the panel named Mahbouba Seraj who talked about how the Taliban is oppressing Afghan women and their rights.
She spoke about the topic with such certainty and raw emotion that projected onto the audience, including myself.”
The trip is meant to open students’ horizons and allow them to participate in events, giving them a chance to use their voice and allowing them to meet students from our sister schools.
Maldonado said, “I believe this trip will aid me in becoming a more mindful person.
With this characteristic I will be able to navigate through college and my future by being able to create life-lasting connections that can help me achieve my lifelong goals.”
