Loretto Academy takes pride in recognizing the many athletes that walk our halls.
Coming back from winter break, Loretto girls came back as strong as always, between them sophomore Sofia Olvera stands out.
Commitment
When asked how she started swimming, Olvera, said, ‘‘I’ve loved the water since I was a baby, my first time in the pool was at 6 months and I started swim lessons at 3 and competitive at 5.’’
Loretto Academy is a place where Olvera has grown as a swimmer, being her first year at Loretto, she quickly caught attention of everyone.
Captain of the swim team, Isela Iglesias, said, ‘‘Sofia is really good, she trains really hard, is dedicated and responsible.’’
Training is essential for personal and professional development, Olvera is aware and said, ‘‘I show up every day [to practice], whether it’s at my Loretto practice or my club practice.
I show up and try my best even though my best may not be so good some days it’s definitely the effort that counts.’’
Discipline is a quality that can be used to describe Sofia Olvera, she has shown her effort and as she said ‘‘When it starts getting hard, that’s the moment where people give up but is where you should train twice as hard to get ahead.’’
Swimming Regionals
Olvera’s next stop was TAPPS Swimming Regionals where she stood out for getting first in all her events.
Olvera swam a total of four events including 200 Yard Medley Relay, 200 Yard IM, 100 Yard Breast, and 400 Yard Free Relay.
When asked about the next competition, TAPPS Swimming States, Olvera said, ‘‘Overall I’m excited to swim and race with the other girls but sad the season is ending… I don’t really want it to end.’’
Sofia Olvera’s commitment to swimming is outstanding and admirable, her recognition as athlete of the month was well earned.
