Loretto’s basketball teams practiced and prepared for a season of games where they showcased their abilities, and created a sense of unity with one another.
Their practices with Coach Mike, for junior varsity, and Coach Tony, for varsity, built the foundation for them to be successful during the playing season.
This season Loretto JV and varsity basketball teams participated in 25 games each, across El Paso, against schools from different districts in the area.
Several angels that lived both on and off the court this season share their experience with being part of Loretto basketball.
Junior varsity player, freshman Olivia Montelongo said, “For me, it was very fun!
I was able to create friendships with not only girls from my grade but also with upperclassmen.
At times it was challenging when playing good teams, or having early morning practices, but ultimately, my team was able to bond through the hard experiences.
Basketball really is a team sport, and my team was very strong in trust!”
Varsity player and junior, Melania Martinez ,said, “My experience joining the basketball team was definitely eye-opening and very exciting.
I’ve enjoyed the bonds I’ve made with my friends and just how close the team is.
Some takeaways from the season are to give your best always, especially at practice, and to cherish the moment.
I’m sad that this is my first and last season with the seniors, but I can say that I had the funnest time and made so many memories that I will remember forever.”
Varsity player and junior, Lauren Domengeaux, said, “Basketball is special to me, and I keep playing it because it’s a part of me and something I’ve done since I was little.
Additionally, I also really love my team this year.
The coaches have been really focused this year on trying to get us to play more for ourselves to help the team.
The coaches have helped us with our stamina and endurance which I believe has also really helped us with our overall abilities throughout the game.”
As these players wrapped up the season, Senior Night allowed for family, students, and faculty to gather and recognize the seniors who made this season what it was.
Varsity player and senior, Sophie Ryan, said, “I’ve enjoyed getting to know my team members on a more personal level and getting to see the JV team grow, adapt, and become a strong team.
I know our girls will lead Loretto basketball to a bright future!
A takeaway I have from basketball is learning that while wins are important, it is vital to have teammates who always have your back, coaches who will always support and push you, and a team that can persevere through difficulty and succeed under pressure.”
Varsity manager, senior Helen De La Rosa said, “Being a manager was so much fun!
Seeing the team grow throughout the season was nice and being their bookkeeper kept me busy.
What was special for me was seeing the seniors finish their last season at Loretto.
I loved seeing everyone that I played with last year work so hard this season.”
Overall, the 2023-2024 basketball season presented the teams with lessons and memories that go beyond their season’s duration.
