2022 FIFA World Cup
The 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament will be taking place in Qatar and will last from Monday, November 21, 2022, to Sunday, December 18, 2022.
Due to intense hot weather complications, the tournament was moved around the wintertime.
Among the 64 teams that qualified for the World Cup are the United States, France, Argentina, Portugal, and Canada.
After not qualifying in 2018, the US is back after earning a higher point differential over Costa Rica, which earned them a berth in the tournament.
The US’s roster is completed, but starting lineups have not been released due to multiple player injuries and undetermined starters.
Young superstars like Alphonso Davies, who will be playing for Canada, are players to look forward to.
Davies debuted as a professional soccer player at the age of 15 for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 team and held a record as the youngest scorer until 2020.
Qatar is facing criticism from fans after recent news of the unethical construction of new stadiums and the trouble of welcoming LGBTQ+ fans.
Over two million migrants worked to build new stadiums in dangerous conditions, many of them weren’t being paid, and they worked long hours.
Pride flags presented by gay fans may spark controversy because, in Qatar, homosexuality is an offense punishable by up to three years in prison, same-sex marriage is not recognized, and promoting gay rights is illegal.
Despite these issues, the organizers of the tournament said in an email, “FIFA and Qatar are committed to delivering a discrimination-free tournament that is welcoming to all.”
