The 27th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place on April 4th, 2021, presenting 13 awards for the outstanding performances in film and television.

The SAG Awards debuted for the first time in 1995 in California.

This year’s ceremony took place completely over the platform of Zoom and was pre recorded to avoid any technological difficulties.

For the first time in SAG history, the four top individual film honors were awarded to people of color; Viola Davis, Chadwick Boesman, Daniel Kaluuya, and Youn Yuh-jung.

Youn Yuh-jung also made history by becoming the first Korean actress to win the award for best supporting actress for her role in Lee Isaac Chung’s semi-autobiographical film, Minari.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 earned the night’s top prize, winning the award for best ensemble, ‘the guild’s top honor equivalent to a best picture prize.’

According to the award ceremony website ‘the ceremony was dedicated by actors themselves, to the art and craft of acting, and prompted future telecasts to include anecdotes from distinguished veterans on the field.’

The Crown, Ma’ Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and others were some of the big winners of the night.
