Mr. Vice President, we’re speaking now
December 11, 2020
As the most stressful week of elections came to a close, women and girls of color finally got a bit of representation we all deserve.
With the being the first woman, woman of color, and Asian woman winning the position of Vice President, Kamala Harris is the bit of representation millions of women like me have sought.
Being a woman is hard but being a Brown and Black woman creates different disparities in terms of representation in high positions.
Reflecting on my life as a brown girl in a white man’s world, I genuinely think Harris will set an even stronger precedent for women like me who plan on being in positions created for men.
In my life, I have not seen a lot of women of color in powerful places, but the ones I have witnessed are powerful and effective, and I believe Kamala Harris will be another powerful and effective woman in charge.
As a proud Latina, I think it’s amazing to see a brown woman on the world stage, setting a precedent for myself and millions of girls all over the US.
Harris’s past views on criminal justice, from defending the death penalty to overcrowding prisons, may be difficult to look past, but she has moved considerably to the left of the spectrum since being California’s Attorney General.
I am willing to look passed her past and continue to see her work towards creating beneficial policies, but as a citizen, I will hold her accountable to the promises she has made, such as stricter gun control and holding accountable the killers of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd.
Another reason I’m so proud to have a woman on this stage is her incredible ability to lead, she reminds me of my mother, both being able to absolutely obliterate republican men in arguments while simultaneously being the most graceful person in any room.
Vice president-elect Harris will only be the first of many more women to come, she has become a trail blazer by showing how tough women actually are and their capability to hold a prestigious position like this.
As a message to all the previous men who were vice presidents, like Vice President Pence, who feel like they can talk over women and women of color, we’re speaking now, and we’re now being represented in a position to make change.
I know I have always dreamed of being in a position like Vice president-elect Harris’s, and now it’ll be a little easier to achieve that because my voice is amplified at the table too.
Now that I have lived to see the first woman Vice President-elect, I can continue to strive for prestigious positions knowing I can do it too.
Vice president-elect Harris now represents all women who have been talked over and overlooked, and her ability to rise to this position will make a path for women in all positions to rise above.
She has shown all women and women of color that we can be at the table making important changes too, we’re speaking now and we’re about to make changes.
