Gun control in our world today
November 12, 2019
I believe that gun control laws are something that should be enforced to help prevent mass shootings and deaths.
The Governor of Texas, Gregg Abbott has called eight executive orders after the shootings that took place in August.
His eight executive orders call for criminals to be informed they can’t own a gun, better background checks, and if a firearm is stolen for it to be reported according to cbsnews.
The topic of Gun Control has become a controversial one due to the amount of mass shooting that have taken place.
“Gun control” is a term used when talking about the restriction on what kinds of firearms can be sold and bought, who can buy or sell one, where and how they are stored or carried.
Locally, the topic has been discussed more than ever due to the recent mass shootings in El Paso and Odessa.
It evoked a fear in El Pasoans to do a simple daily task such as going to Walmart to buy groceries.
The federal law right now requires that licensed gun dealers have background checks through a database run by the FBI, to see if the customer is among those prohibited from owning a gun according to the New York Times.
Those who have criminal records or mental illness, are drug addicts, immigrants without legal status, veterans who left the military with a dishonorable discharge, or anyone with a permanent restraining order keeping them from a partner or a partner’s children are not allowed to purchase a gun.
This system is not always the best because anyone wanting to buy a gun will look to other sources to purchase one.
I believe anyone who has the need to buy a gun will go out and buy one, wether it is from a first and or second hand seller.
Anyone searching to buy a gun and is not allowed to can just go to a second hand seller. With second hand sellers you are not required to pass a background check.
As a result this many people are calling for better Gun Control laws.
With these new laws I believe that gun violence will be prevented and kept under control.
