On Wednesday, February 20th the second annual Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) fest began in the Little Theater at Loretto Academy.

The WiSE fest began last year with the help of Mr. Silva, Sister Buffy, and Mrs. Cobb.

The WiSE fest began in order to replace the science fair that is put in place for all AP science classes throughout Loretto.

The fest began with numerous speakers ranging from freshmen, to juniors to seniors.

The talks were held differently than last year because rather than being optional for teachers to take you to the presentation, it was an official high school assembly.

The assembly included speakers talking about our “star stuff”, eating disorders, and  the green team even made an appearance to present a new form of recycling.

The next day the assembly went on but in a more interactive way in the gym with both the high school, middle school, and the elementary students.

The elementary students did not begin their tour of the festival until noon, while the high school students were in the gym during the morning.

The science fair part of the festival began with different hostess giving each student who walked through the doors a ticket that could be stamped with different types of foods and activities all around.

Once a certain activity that required for the stamp to be crossed out was completed, the student who was in charge of the booth would cross it out or use a hole-puncher to remove it.

The reason behind this was so that the students who were walking through the fair let others participate instead of just a few select students eating all the food.

The activities varied from making bath-bombs to guessing what type of fruit was organic and which one was made from  GMOs, and a pH scale that changed colors depending on the level of the scale.

WiSE stands for Women in Science and Engineering and that is exactly what the students who participated in the talks and fair promoted with their different activities and talks.
