Border Emergency
March 4, 2019
On February 15, President Donald Trump declared a national emergency on the border as a plan to get the finance he needs to build the wall, which he promised in his 2016 Presidential Campagin.
The emergency was announced after Congress gave the President $1.3 billion for the $5.7 billion wall.
Along with announcing the emergency, President Trump signed a bill stating there will be no government shutdown until later that year, possible October.
Many people believe the national emergency is unnecessary.
Judiciary chairman Jerry Nadler and other House Democrats who chair subcommittees of the judiciary panel, signed the letter to the president; it said, “we believe your declaration of an emergency shows a reckless disregard for the separation of powers and your own responsibilities under our constitutional system.”
Trump’s reason for declaring a national emergency is because he believes many drugs are coming into our country along with, human traffickers, criminals, and gangs.
However, illegal crossings have decreased since earlier years, according to CNN.
White House officials believe the national emergency will give the President $8 billion for the wall, including the $1.3 billion from Congress.
The money will come from a few different places: $600 million from the Treasury drug forfeiture, $2.5 billion from counter drug activities with the Department of Defense and some reprogramming from other Pentagon accounts, and $3.6 billion in military construction funds.
The wall will be a metal barrier that covers 234 miles along the Mexican American border, covering parts of states such as California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
President Trump said, “I didn’t need to do this, I just want to get it done faster, that’s all.”
This angered many because they believe he is disrespecting the Constitution and not taking his role seriously.
President Trump’s wall is coming as he promised, however, it may cause more issues than it does good.
