The 2022-2023 basketball season at Loretto is officially underway!

There are three Loretto basketball teams: Freshmen, Junior Varsity, and Varsity.

The varsity team has a total of 10 players and consists of a combination of girls from different grade levels.

They started the season on Nov. 4, 2022, in a game against San Elizario High School.

San Elizario defeated Loretto 42-23.

Varsity team captain and senior Isabella Lozano said, “At the beginning of the season I felt more discouraged since I have never played with any of these players and at the first practice they seemed to play scared and not really know the fundamentals of basketball.

But as the season progressed they proved me wrong.

They showed me that they have heart, and they’ll give one hundred percent of their potential on the court.”

The team has participated in two tournaments since the start of the season.

In both the Loretto and Ysleta Tournaments, the varsity team placed fourth.

Varsity player and junior Helen de la Rosa said, “At first it was a lot of pressure, but at the same time it’s really exciting.

I was nervous at the beginning of the season, but now it’s really fun.”

On Dec. 6, Loretto’s varsity team played Bel Air High School.

After being down by 28 points, Loretto made it a 5-point game at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Despite their great effort, Loretto lost 45-54.

With many games left this season, there is no doubt that Loretto will give it their all on the court.

The entire Loretto community supports the team, and everyone hopes they will have a successful season.

Best of luck to the team from The Prax Staff!
