The anticipated volleyball game between Cathedral and Loretto, also known as the ‘Battle of the Sexes,’ took place on October 2, 2019.

The game that Cathedral and Loretto have been waiting for had finally approached where twelve Cathedral boys competed against twelve Loretto girls that are on the varsity volleyball team.

The Cathedral seniors walked into the Loretto gym prepared to walk out with a win because they believed they were well prepared.

Gustavo Navarro, who played for the Cathedral volleyball team, said, “We practiced for about six weeks, Tuesdays and Thursdays for two hours and on Saturday mornings as well.”

Anneliese Gil, Loretto senior varsity player, said, “I was actually very excited to play; after hearing that they started to practice early to win made me notice how competitive they were actually willing to get.”

The whole game was very exciting for both schools, with Loretto winning two sets and Cathedral winning one set.

The gym was full of screams from the girls at Loretto but mostly from the bleachers full of Cathedral boys supporting their team by getting loud and throwing Rodrigo Padron, a senior, in the air to support his classmates.

“To be completely honest, we thought we were going to win; after preparing for this game we thought we would come out with a win,” said Navarro.

This game was organized by the Loretto Athletic Association (LAA) to raise money for equipment that will be used around the gym.

Angela Glover, athletic director of Loretto Academy, said, “The money from the Battle of the Sexes is going to the volleyball program for three new practice poles, two nets, and some padding.  The ones we have needed to be replaced; we’ve had them for over 20 years.”

The Battle of the Sexes was organized to get both of the schools to come together and compete for a fundraiser and to have fun.
